Proposal
My proposal idea
For my FMP I want to create a rock/indie rock music video to make a social and political point. I want to have my music video call out to younger audiences by sharing opinions that the vast age demographic have towards the age group. I also want it to challenge issues that are currently happening within the country/within British politics. The main political points I want to discuss and take further could be the UK governments role in there current war conflicts in Israel and Palestine and Russia and Ukraine, the Conservative parties opinions on equality (LGBTQ, refugees, misogyny, age, race & religion) and how this effects the younger generation of the UK or the privilege's of politicians which is unrecognized by themselves.
Looking at influences and inspiration
Whilst coming up with ideas for my music videos, I can begin the process by researching directors of music videos that have a specific style or genre that I may be able to match to my music video. When looking at these documentary's we can see if there are any specific connections between the music and the video itself. For instance, if the song discusses fame - it may have the artist surrounded by paparazzi's, if the song discusses driving - the music video may have cars in or the artist driving.
There are 5 types of music videos that are commonly used. They are:
-
Performative (commonly showing the artist or band singing/playing, dancing and lip syncing).
-
Narrative (this shows the audience a story that is connected to the lyrics, this often does not have any lip-syncing and follows for of a short film style).
-
Concept music videos (Doesn't tell a story or have the lyrics match the footage, is more "out there".
-
Lyric videos (show the lyrics of the song on screen, feature more visual graphics and rarely feature artist).
-
Animated music video (Is often cartoon or CGI, seen frequently by artists such as Gorillaz who have mainly animated music videos).
I will now look at different directors, their style of choice and different contemporary media influences that could reflect in my work.
Von Dutch - Charli XCX
Directed By TORSO
Von Dutch by Charli XCX is a new dance song and is the first single on her new album "Brat" coming out later this summer. With this in mind Charli goes around a airport "behaving like a brat" - posing for cameras, jumping over barriers, and climbing on planes. The style of music video would be performative as Charli is lip-syncing her own lyrics. It is also performative as it doesn't tell a real story it just follows her singing and movements. The songs lyrics come across "narcissistic and self obsessed" however as a result of this the Director has used shaky/unsteady filming techniques as Charli is unpredictable and causing havoc throughout the airport. The camera movements reflect on her behavior. It uses a range of transitions moving the sequence from one shot to another for example, when Charli hits the camera with her head - it changes from being on the travellator to then being in the waiting area of the airport, or when she is on top of the airplane she lays down kicks the camera which then moves around to show her standing up. The lighting used is low key and often uses flashing lights and spotlights. This emphasizes the way Charli is acting in and around the airport as it is "darker" eg dramatic and maybe even disturbing.
Looking into how TORSO has made this music video relevant to Charli's audience. Since starting her music career in 2012 featuring on "I Love It" with Icona Pop, Charli XCX has been widely described over the years as a "Icon" and having her show the almost "look at me" personality makes her appeal to teen/young adult audiences as she shows her own confidence which many people will then reflect on themselves whilst listening to Von Dutch. This is reflected in the music video when Charli pushes the camera man down the stairs and then catwalk's down them herself showing that she does not care and she feels confident within herself. Charli's new single emphasis's the dance scene and her new album, TORSO has directed this using camera movements, lighting and iconism to market, appeal and approach to a audience of younger adults and teenagers.
Robbers - The 1975
Directed by Tim Mattia
Released in 2014, The 1975 brought out the music video for Robbers which featured on their self titled debut album. Robbers follows the story of a couple in a toxic relationship dealing with substance abuse issues and then later steal from a convenience shop. The bands front man Matty Healy explained to Genius the context of Robbers - how two people in the relationship are "robbing" each other of happiness due to their co dependence on one another. The 1975 – Robbers Lyrics | Genius Lyrics
Directed by Tim Mattia, Robbers is an excellent representation of a narrative music video. This is due to the music video following more of a short film structure and does not mainly feature the band performing the song. What makes Robbers so aesthetically pleasing to the audience would be the trend in aesthetics at the time of release. With social media in 2014 largely being based on Instagram and Tumblr, Tim used darker colours and fashion trends which matched the era. For instance, the Fur coat the female lead wears in the opening sequence was a trend made popular by Alexa Chung (Being named the "It girl"). By following trends, the target audience of Robbers is opened up

to a larger demographic (adults who like the 1975, teenagers who like the 1975, anyone who likes fashion, anyone who follows or shows interest in trends).
The "vibe" and aesthetic of The 1975s debut album is represented by dark colours - matching the artwork and imagery within the album. By having the music video match the colour scheme of the album, Tim has kept the continuity that fans will be looking for and keeping it on trend. This will influence the success of the music video as if the trends a line more people will find intrest in the music video.
When looking at the narrative structure that Tim has used, Robbers represents a short film extremely well. In my opinion, I find the Robbers music video very cinematic. He uses footage that foreshadows their story, Eg in the first opening sequence of clips we see 2 shots of the couple walking towards the shop. This automatically makes the audience wonder who these characters are, what their story and why one character is covering his face with a bandana and heading towards the shop. The use of shots tells us that the pair are in a relationship as we are shown them holding hands, kissing and hugging. Tim has used dominant reading to make the audience agree with how he himself (the director)wants the characters to be portrayed. As our main characters, Tim needs to project the likability of the characters to the audience. He has paired this with the characters being in a romantic couple as the active audience will feel more compassion. Tim has also used camera movements to interest the audience. There are no static shots throughout the music video, all shots have some form of movement in them. This could be related to how the characters are in a difficult mental place (seen by dark lighting and color correcting, messy make up and clothing and poor living conditions) by having the camera "shaky". Overall, I take lots of inspiration from Robbers as I like the short film structure.
Right Here, Right Now - Fatboy Slim
Directed by Hammer and Tongs
Right Here, Right Now was released in 1999 for Norman Cooks (FatBoy Slim) album You've Coe a Long Way, Baby. After following the success of songs such as The Rockafeller Skank and Praise You, FatBoy Slim released Right Here, Right Now - a electronic/dance song, maintaining the genre and style of his previously released singles. Right Here, Right Now was created to emphasize how important it is to remain present in the moment. Charting at number 1 in the UK indie scene and number 2 in the UK dance scene, Right Here, Right Now is a classic.
The music video for Right Here, Right Now shows the process of evolution, how humans and the world has evolved since the prehistoric times. The music video is a concept music video - meaning that the footage doesn't follow a strict short film structure and also commonly doesn't match the lyrics. This is exactly what is Right Here, Right now does. Concept music videos are commonly more different than standard music videos and Right Here, Right Now does exactly that. Hammer and Tongs have directed many music videos that also follow a concept video structure - such as Coffee and TV by Blur. I like how Hammer and Tongs have used dominant reading to project the theory of evolution. Whilst conducting research for my proposal I discovered that only 81% of Americans believe in natural evolution. With music videos like Right Here, Right Now, the audience are being shown the process of evolution through Hammer and Tongs and Norman cooks (and the general scientific idea that majority agree with) perspective. This shows it is dominant reading as the director is trying to make the audience believe what they believe. I think this works extremely well as it is a concept music video.
Idea Concepts
Whilst going through the stages of my final major project, I need to reflect on the technical skills I have gained throughout the year during my different project units and how I can develop them further to make my music video to the best of my ability. I want my music video to be interesting and have an active audience. With the theme of my music video challenging social and political issues, I want my audience to feel a connection and want change and to actually do something about it. Using skills and techniques I can emphasis this.
Starting off the year we did a introduction unit. This gave us a brief look into all the different tasks we may complete. Here is a link to this work page Induction | Charlotte Arnold Yea (charlotte2006lr.wixsite.com). This was all completely new to me as I had not used any of these software's or created any of these things before. By doing this unit I gained more learning and education into software's such as illustrator and photo shop by trial and error methods.

This was my first experience using photoshop. I was given different images and different bits of text. This meant that I had to experiment with getting to know how to use layers and different controls, for example to highlight an image, you click on its layer and press Ctrl T. Once I created this alternate movie poster, I recreated one myself.

With the help of my friend Zoe, We recreated the poster of 1992's comedy film Wayne's World. This involved taking the photo of us at the same angle and in the same positions. To use the same background I had to remove Wayne and Garth from the image and then put us into it. I used a range of layers and even used generative fill for the guitar and the drum sticks.

I like how this poster turned out as I would say its fairly similar with the original and I was happy with how I edited it. I could use photoshop if there are any posters or articles that I need to create to market my music video to a wider audience. I would like to develop skills such as more effects and having a wider understanding of the controls.
One of the biggest skills I have learnt whilst doing the course and will continue to develop would be my camera work. Since the beginning of the year I have wanted to make my camera work and filming better throughout my project. For example, one of our first tasks was to create a short film. We had carried out research on short types before hand however were not aware of rules such as the 180 degree rules so broke this a number of times. Over time, we have used the cameras a lot so these skills have been challenged and developed however I do believe there is still more I would like to be able to do whilst filming to make my projects as a whole better (not only my FMP). By using angles, shot types and camera movements, the audience can be suggested certain ideas or can foreshadow what could come next for the protagonist. I believe that camera work can make or break the product that has been made, this is because the footage is physically what my final major project is. With this in mind I want to really focus and develop my camera skills that I have already established within my work.
My favourite unit I have completed throughout the first year of the course would be the Research and Film unit. This is because it allowed me to do detailed analysis analysis of job roles (showing what responsibility's different workers have in film and TV production), looking at different genre conventions (what is typically featured different genres. For example, the genre of horror having lots of low key lighting and blood). I liked this unit as I found it very interesting being able to use things that you wouldn't typically notice, such as different angles and shot types, to represent more outcomes of context.
A link to my work on this unit : https://charlotte2006lr.wixsite.com/charlotte-arnold-yea/research-and-film
My least favourite unit we have done would be the Visual Design unit. This is because compared to the other units, I preferred them more. I struggled with the Visual Design unit as I was more unfamiliar with the concept of infographics, meaning that it was harder to make them. I also struggled with finding the best layout for my infographic. This was because the information I wanted to put into my infographic was all in different values eg some numerical, some alphabetical and some yes or no values. This was my final infographic. I think that I tried hard to make it make sense however it seems a bit messy and chaotic. In my FMP, I may reflect on tasks using visual graphics, if I create things like infographics, I would like them to look more sleek like this one.

Here, I have created a pie chart to rate out of 10 mow much I liked each unit. Whilst units like visual design, interactive media and scripts and story's scored lower in comparison to documentary production and research and film, I understand that I will naturally take things I learnt in each unit further, develop them and use them in my FMP.

Target Audience
Target audience is something that should be thought about thoroughly in the process of making my music video. Music as a whole has many different crowds and target audiences. There are 1,300 different music genres across the world and they are not limited to stereotypes, such as girls only listening to pop music and boys only listening to rock music. However, when looking at target audience for my music video there are two topics I need to consider. One being the musical aspect of it - who (mainly) listens to that genre of music, what's is the overview of how the music makes the audience feel, what does that music make the audience think about. The other being how can I link this demographic (music fans) to the social and political point I want to make. For example, if I was looking at creating a music video for an artist like Taylor Swift or Little Mix, majority of their fan bases are white, teenage, females so they would be my target audience. However, if I was using a AC/DC song my target audience would be white, older, males.

For my music video, I need to have a wide demographic due to the political and social theming for it. To gain and maintain an active audience, I need to agree with a side of people ( the Labor party and their voters) and challenge the other side of people (the Conservative party and their voters). This will help create a talking point of my video - what are the opinions of it? This will be by reaching out to a large target audience. We can decide this through creating an audience profile.
When looking at creating a audience profile we need to consider two other things. Socio - Economic Classification and psychographics. Socio - Economic classification is how Job pay across england are split into upper class, upper middle class, middle class, working class and lower class. Jobs are put into categories A, B, C1, C2,D, E

Through looking at socio - economic classes we can think about how the adult population are spilt and what may appeal to different groups. The other thing we can look at is Psychographics. Psychographics are similar to the socio economic class system in the fact that it groups different people into categories. Psychographics are used to establish traits that you have within your personality and see what kind of person you are. For example, if you are very hard working and high achieving you may be a aspirier. Here is an example of some of the groupings.

Having now looked at all of the factors to consider I can create my audience profile to find my target audience.
Audience Profile
Demographics:
Gender : All
Ethnicity : All
Age: 15-21 and 40-60
Region: Focusing on the British government so London
Socio - economic status: A and E
Psychographics:
Has two main sides - a group of protagonists and a group of antagonists. The group of protagonists are all younger teenagers/young adults and they are protesting and fighting with the antagonists which are all in suits and have briefcases (they are politicians). The protagonist group needs to be strong and visually show that they are passionate about what they are fighting for. Want to show a range of different people that the government may have criticized or have made insensitive comments about publicly. Need to show their true emotions of anger, fear and hope. They could all be holding signs with what political conflict they are arguing over, for example some could hold up signs expressing the government need to do more to help support Ukraine and Palestine, some could be holding up signs showing that they are trans and they are not "confused" as the older generation, social media and the conservative party has made many transphobic comments along these lines. Some could also hold signs saying that the government do not listen to the younger generation and that their decisions will mainly effect our lives. The antagonists should also be strong but in the sense of them being ignorant and arrogant towards the younger generation. They need to be very strict and reserved but I also want them to show similar emotions of anger and frustration.
Likes:
Likes of the younger generation could be; equality, social media, fashion, music.
Likes of the older generation could be; formal ideas, hardworking, reminiscing of the past.
Dislikes:
Dislikes of the younger generation; old ways of thinking, inequality, discriminations
Dislikes of the older generation; new ideas and ways of thinking, newer social constructs
Primary/Secondary data & theory
Throughout the process of my proposal and later FMP, I will use a range of data. I will get this data from a range of sources. This data will really help my music video as it will help make it more detailed, more targeting and more researched and understood.
There are 2 main different types of data research:
-
Primary research is research that you carry out primarily yourself. This could count as surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, interviews and observations. Primary research can help find the underlying issues that a group of people face and to understand what their issues are. With the results of primary research, we can do a in depth analysis and this can help us change our products to gain a larger target audience and primary user base.
-
Secondary research is research that comes from already existing sources. This means that the data has already been found out and have previously been shared. For example this could be websites, magazines, articles, documents, and overall statistics.
-
There is also academic research this is information and data written by someone with a degree that could provide educational content used for research.
So what research can I do?
When researching for my music video I will use a variety of primary and secondary research and data. To make the research relevant to my music video I need to find ways to gain peoples opinions of the politics and government and make my target audience larger.
Primary research method 1: Surveys. Surveys are a good way of find out what percentage of people think about what is asked and for them to share their own views and opinions. When creating my survey in the research process, I could focus it on the different political views of different age demographics and how this ranges. I could as questions such as "what is your age", "did you vote in the last general election" and "do you agree with how the UK government is ran". This survey could be sent around social media to gain attention from lots of different groups. For instance, putting my survey on a local Facebook page could generate response from generations such as Baby Boomers and millennials as they are commonly said to be the larger volume of users due to time of creation and simplicity to use. These results could be compare to sharing my survey on Instagram or snapchat as this will generally have a much larger audience whos views may differ. I can also create graphics and charts to represent the information gained. Survey's are quick to make and share and will be a essential part of my FMP.

Graphs that have been created following the use of primary research. Specifically, surveys and questionnaires. These to me and secondary research.
Primary research idea 2: I could conduct a number of interviews with people to really understand on a one to one level of what like like or dislike about the current government and politicians in charge of todays society. After completing my survey and gaining responses, I can take a handful of people from the older generation and the younger generation and ask them questions such as "What do you like about the conservative party?", "What do you like about how the conservative party and Rishi Sunak run the country?", "Is there anything you dislike about how they run the country and if so what?", "The last Labour government was in 2010 with Gordon Brown as prime minister before David Cameron and the conservative party came to power, do you miss any of the features the Labour party had that the conservative party doesn't?", "Do you think that the young people of todays opinions are heard and taken into consideration in the discussion of new laws and policies in the Houses of Commons? " and "If you had to vote for a party and prime minister right here right now, who would you choose?". Through interviewing different people, I can gather wider opinions and feedback through word of mouth communication. With the information and data received I can again compare my findings and use this information to wider my demographics and target audience. I have previously researched interview techniques and the use of Vox pops in my unit on documentary production. I put this to use and went out filming using these techniques, with this previous experience I can create a well structured and well thought-out set of interviews.
This is my short documentary, where we used a range of interviews (vox pops) to gather information. I would like to gain better skills and adapt my interview skills to be better in my final major project.
Primary research idea 3: Action research can be used as a form of primary research as I can practice, learn and gain knowledge in practical areas of my FMP. When moving forward into the editing process of my music video, I need to use a range of techniques to make it interesting and of a good quality. This could be from looking at camera movements and shot types to looking at using editing skills and effects. For example, when conducting action research I could go out with a camera and film a sequence displaying and learning how to use camera angles, movements and shots to provoke different feelings, emotions and views of what is being show on screen. Through using action research we can see what went well, what could be changed, how things can visually be seen and what might not have gone so well. This can be developed over time so that the use of what ever you would like to use in your work is visually pleasing the audience. I will be conducting action research further on in the project.
Secondary research idea 1: Using websites can be a extremely beneficial way of gathering information as it will save time and resources. Websites and online sources such as Gov.uk gives accurate and factual information regarding the government policies, law, systems and services. Gov.uk information is available to the public sector and it is the official website for the UK government. Based on the fact my music video is surrounding the subject of politics in the UK, Gov.uk will be an excellent source of secondary research as all the information I will need regarding the history, news, departments and statistics will be on here and will be from a official source.

Already in my proposal, I have used Gov.uk.
Secondary research idea 2: BBC news is a good information source as it is the biggest trusted news source (BBC Annual Report - A Year of Delivery and Moments that Brought Us Together - Media Centre) in the UK. The British Broadcasting Corporation was founded in 1922 and has been covering world wide news and current affairs since. BBC reports on many topics, eg sport, entertainment, politics, local headlines and food. The BBC would be useful as their coverage is constant and you can also see old articles too. This means that I can search and find reliable information that is related to the time in which my piece is set. For example, my music video will be a narrative genre music video set in present day so will be related to todays political news, but if I set it in the 90s it could be related to Tony Blairs election win or the Conflict in Northern Ireland. Being able to look at constant up to date political news will emphasize the current issues at hand.

Secondary research idea 3: I myself have mixed views on Wikipedia due to questions of its reliability however typically if you search for a question or a topic itself, Wikipedia is one of the first things to come up . Due to its large variety of subject and the detail it goes into, Wikipedia is a very helpful to quickly gain more knowledge towards what I am researching. The reliability of Wikipedia is often discussed due to people being able to edit and change information however a quick background search could briefly be used to double check the accuracy of what you have found out.

Action Research
Action Research is used to test and experiment with either equipment, techniques or software that will be used in the creation of my music video. Whilst making my music video I will use filming/camera work, lighting and colour correcting, editing and potentially sound work (most likely not as the music video will be covered by my song of choice however some narrative music videos have the music pause and may show a conversation between two characters in the music video before having the music start again). A good examle of this would be 2 minutes into Dusk Till Dawn - Sia & Zayn, the music stops whilst a scene plays out before the music then comes back and the rest of the music video is shown.
I may want to use this technique so may need to edit trying to fade and stop the music to then use a audio clip and then fade the music back in. This could make my music video more interesting to the audience as you want to know what this interaction means to the protagonist, how this will effect the story and how the music will relate to it.
Another skill I may try would be my visual effects using Adobe After Effects. Whilst practicing motion graphics in the Interactive Media unit, I really struggled with the control and making my effects look sleek.
In the music video for Break Free - Ariana Grande & Zedd, they use an opening sequence of motion graphics in the style of Star Wars opening credits. It tells the audience the music video is "exciting" and an "adventure" whilst the graphics roll up to the top of the frame and disappear before a graphic appears. This gives an introduction and also a more iconic twist on the music video. This also works well as the genre of the music video is narrative so it has a more story telling aspect. This may be good to use in my music video as it is a good technique to use. I will be creating a motion graphic inspired from these graphics.
I started off by finding a youtube video which went through how to create a text crawl similar, step by step.
This is a screenshot of me watching the video and using it to create my motion graphic.

After following the youtube video, I created my text crawl graphic. I found this difficult as I struggle with After Effects the most out of all of the software we use however it was easier than some of the past work I have created using After Effects.
As a first draft, it has been good to experiment and see if it would fit well into my music video and also gain more confidence in using after effects. I think that there is opportunity for it to fit in nicely but maybe as a end credit roll instead of opening the video. If I was to use this effect in my music video I would start the graphic with my band/musicians logo to give credit to them and show the audience it is their song, I could also use a transparent background or the first frame of my first shot in my music video (use the effect straight onto footage to have the use of my effect more visually pleasing to the audience). One thing I would change would be the speed of how the graphic moves. Whilst I was editing I moved the key fames to be sooner as upon watching it a few times it just seemed too slow, however this made the speech go too quickly and with feedback from my mum she said that it became tough to read.
After testing After Effects and motion graphic, I then tried taking the inspiration I liked from Dusk Till Dawn - Zayn and Sia by having the music stop or fade out and then have dialogue be said.

We filmed a couple of takes to see in the moment what would work well. I decided that I just wanted a first draft and a quick edit of using the technique. I found a song with a build up/beat drop to show the dialogue. I used a zoom mic to record the dialogue and then began editing.
The fundamental features of my action research video would be the footage itself, the song of choice, the microphone audio an the editing. When we shot the footage, I stood the camera on a tripod and began filming. I didn't use any lighting equipment as I new I would be colour grading it anyways. I put key frames into the "beat drop" part and then lowered the audio levels gradually - before raising them gradually. I added the audio clip into the media bin and then put a range of sound effects on it to try and make it better. I added parametric equalizer, de nosier, amplifier, hard limiter, de esser and single band compressor. I experimented with each effect, however I really struggled with getting it to sound "cinematic" this is something I really will need to work on if I use a microphone for anything within my music video. When I colour graded the last part - following the beat drop, I created key frames and then cut each one with the lyrics of the song before then turning up the saturation, temperature and tint. This was one of the easier features of my action research video and something I may use going forward in my FMP.
Looking at both my pieces of action research, the most useful technique would be selecting my key frames to then lower the audio. To be used in my music video I could lower and cut the song and then use any diegetic/non-diegetic audio or dialogue and then once finished with added in audio maybe have a transition and then have the song start again from where the cut was left.
Project Workflow
Workflow can be used to help structure the time it will take to do tasks for my final major project. This will make my work better as it will not be rushed, it will be planned out precisely for when things need to be done by

In my project workflow, I sectioned it into the tasks and the months I have to do them. I have until June to complete my FMP so need to work towards June with structure.
Final plan
Over the period of creating my proposal for my music video, I have considered options, discussed different ways of thinking about how to incorporate different features, different techniques and news coverage to gain a consistent and precise music video which surrounds to subject of politics. This can cover the UK government's contribution to war conflicts in Palestine and Ukraine and how politicians do not listen the the future generation. Research will include political statements made from Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak discussing these conflicts and what part the UK will do to help, what the general public political views are and what age demographics think about the conservative party in power, how will the changes Rishi Sunak is implementing will effect the young people of todays later life and what can be done about it.
My idea is to have a mix of performative and narrative music video genres to visually please the audience, taking inspiration from music videos such as Country House - Blur where some of it is being performed (lip-sync) and some of it is filled with a short film type of film sequence. I want to do this as it will show I have reflected on what conventions different music video genres may show and feature. In terms of mise en scene, I need to consider everything that can be seen on screen.
Mise en scene can reflect on information like props, set design, costumes & make up, lighting, shot composition. In my music video, I have the vision of having a protest and fight between the younger generation, who are unable to vote, and the older generation, who do not consider how their votes, policies and ideas will effect the younger generation who will most likely out live the people making these situations. I want to represent many different people who are apart of minority's that have been offended by politicians and the party's up for election. This could be the trans (LGBT) community which is being constantly being undermined in discussions between the prime minister and the conservative party, people within races who are belittled within politics - could relate to Rishi Sunak sending asylum seckers to Rwanda instead of allowing residency in the UK, young woman who are often the victims of verbal abuse with sports, politics, the workplace that put up with it due to power conflict (men against women). Bottom line is anyone apart of a minority that are not gaining the support from the government that they need to live without judgment (due to lack of education) within the UK should be featured within my music video. These characters will represent the younger generation and how the government should take us seriously to try provide a better future for us as we are unable to vote for change ourselves and lack opportunity to suggest any changes. I want to have a group of people portraying the government and the older generation of our country. Ideally I would like to factually have this as older people (50+) however if I am unable to find as many people who would like to be involved as I would like, I could represent the older people by having people in white haired wigs, and stereotypical outfits from the past (eg shoulder pads, powersuits, polka dot dresses and geometric prints, use zimmer frames and walking sticks and have some in suits to represent the politicians. I could even have the same cast of people portraying the different age demographics and groups to show that we are all the same and should be equals.
Thinking about the technical aspects of my music video, I want to choose the best options to give my music video a sleek finish. My aims for my music video is for it to be challenging. Using the song Stand Up by Bilk, I want to visually represent the lyrics. Using camera movements and shot types I want to give the audience a sense of confusion as one side seems determined and angry and one side seems "tiered and fed up". I want my music video to have a new approach yet still use features that are commonly seen within music videos. I had thought about filming in a playground or in a school setting to represent the childish techniques that politicians use to gain support , for instance upscaling each others manifestos in parliament to seen better suited to the role of prime minister when they are just saying this to gain votes. I want to use a wide establishing shot at the beginning of the music video to show the location and the context. I want to use a range of angles to infer to the audience the position of power the age demographics for instance high angles looking down on subjects could suggest the subject does not have as much power, low angles looking up could show that the subject has power. In my case, the higher angle will be used to refer to the younger age group as they are "smaller" and do not have as much power as the older generation who will be shown my a lower angle. Over the process of a music video this could change by having the camera shots come to the same angle/level.
Looking at lighting and colour grading, I could have it relatively "gloomy" by having the colour tint and temperature lower and using very minimal added in lighting. Lighting could be used in additional scenes to emphasis certain portrayal for instance, I could have a couple of people in suits walk into shot, these people will represent the Politian's, the lighting on the older generation side could get brighter and maybe even feature a spotlight suggesting those people look up to them and the lighting on the younger generation side to could become darker to represent their feelings towards the Politian's. Lighting can be touched up with colour correction and grading.
I don't particularly need to focus on sound as my audio will be covered up an changed through adding my song however I will need to run a lip sync test to make sure I can line up my visuals and my audio. I could also look at sound effects, for instance maybe at the beginning showing the politicians and older generation in the play area I could have a ice cream van sound to emphasize their childish traits.
To conclude, looking at the technicality of how making my music video will be, I can set out my standards prior to begin shooting. I want my final to be a good representation of how my hard skills have changed and developed. From looking at my first short film - how the editing and general ideas have changed to create better pieces. Also looking at how overtime I have brought more things into work, for example starting to used microphones instead of just having the audio be picked up from the camera, with the use of using different and new equipment also changing my editing techniques to make the use of equipment beneficial to my final project. For instance when using the microphones I may add on effects such as parametric equalizer and denoiser to give it a better quality. All the work I have completed has given me knowledge and understanding of how ideas, concepts and tasks in the film and TV industry are structured and how they are ordered to benefit production. These skills and techniques will be important to my music video as it can effect the success.
My role
My role in my music video will mainly be production based but would like a little cameo in it as well. Only I have the vision for my music video which will mean I shall need to be in control of mise en scene - showing everything on screen. My role will mostly be up to me and will not rely on others. If I did have a minor cameo in my music video, I may need to have someone to help just make sure that the camera is in focus and is actually showing what is needed to be seen. It is common for directors to have a brief cameo in shows or films and I feel passionately about the subject at hand so would love to visually be apart of it instead of just being behind the creation.
By being the director and the overall decision maker I can really work hard on what I want to show and what techniques I can show. In my first action research I looked into using visual effects and having the song quiet whilst dialogue is spoken. Being the director means that I am able to choose exactly what I want to be featured in my music video and also what would benefit the audience.
Action Plan
Action plans are used to time manage when my different sections and different tasks I will need to do. When creating my action plan, I need to look at dates and dead lines and what I will need to
