Proposing 3 Ideas

One of the first steps of our final major project is to figure out what I believe to be the most beneficial form of media to make. During the time I have spent taking media at sixth form I have made a range of different projects. These ranging from short films, documentary's, and evaluating films. When choosing what to do as my final major project it is advised that you should create something you know well. I have created a mood board to show my thoughts for each idea.

1. Music video

Music is a huge part of my life. I love the history of how genres have been changed and represented over the years and the gain in success of different acts. I also love how things can be said through music, for example how the artist may feel about someone or even their opinions on current affairs that affect daily life. I have chosen a music video with this in mind as well as the fact that I want a future career in the general music business. The images I have used reflect on what I like or what I may want to feature in my music video, e.g I like the idea of some sort of conflict (represented by the article about Blur V Oasis, the article about The Prodigy discussing politicians and the article discussing Brandon from The Killers struggling mentally).  I also Like the idea of my music video featuring a large group of people, this has been represented by the Backstreets Back music video as there  is a large group of people in a dance number. I also used a range of images that I think represents the process and subject well.

2. Documentary

I have chose making a documentary second as I think there is a lot I could discuss and show. Documentary's are based on so many different things ; daily life, celebrity's, music, history, crime and so much more. There's also 6 main documentary genres that I would like to experiment with, I have previously made a expository documentary in the last unit and would like to develop this further - growing my skills and creating an overall better documentary. I once again have used images to reflect on what inspiration I would like to carry into my project. One of my favorite documentaries/docuseries would be Tiger King as I think it should a wide range of characters and both sides of the story (as well as it being entertaining). I like how they use pre existing footage, interviews, b roll and "fly on the wall" structured filming as it represents everything you look for in a "typical documentary".

3. Short Film

Creating short films is something I have done numerous times since starting media this year. This means that I am familiar with the structure and the tasks that go into creating short films. I have put creating a short film 3rd as I think I would struggle with creating a script that is interesting and having the storyline not drag on. I again would like to develop my skills in creating short films in areas such as editing, writing, sound engineer and doing lighting.

Project Proposal

Before starting my FMP it is best to carry out a proposal. This means that there is a clear and consist understanding of what I will be creating and how I will go about it.

Rationale

Whilst taking media at sixth form I have learnt a large variety of skills and had a look into how the industry works. When starting the course I had no previous experience in the feild of media and was concerened that I would not understand things as well as the rest of the class who may have taken it at GCSE. Luckily, this was not the case. We began by testing and using softwear such as Adobe creative suite (illustrater, photoshot, premier pro, after effects) and websites such as studio binder and youtube to help develop my skills. The use of these softwears and websites has built up my skills over time and means I can use them throught my FMP well. For example, being able to use Premier Pro and After Effects will mean that I am able to edit my FMP well and have it feature a range of effects that will make it smooth, more interesting and overall a better peice of work. This will benefit me later in life as having these skills will open the door to what potential job roles I could fit well in.

Project concept

For my Final Major Project I would like to create a music video that challenges political views and social contrust. I would like to find a song that lyrically discusses issues in the world whilst having a good tempo or beat. Some of my favourite artists fall into the "rock" or "indie rock" genre so would like to find something that falls into that catagory. Whilst looking online, I found many musicians and bands that publically discuss the current political state of the world and often have their music reflect their thoughts.

I will need to research what songs have lyrics in them which match the vibe that I am wanting for my music video. I could also research what musicians talk about politics openly as many do not want to discuss politics as they don't want to loose followers/ supporters who do not agree. I will also need to research and think about where to film as location also could be important. For example, Cambridge city council is ran by the Labour party but Chelmsford is conservative. I need to gather opinions from the general public to see their thoughts on current topics within the news.

Evaluation

To keep my work consist, I will do constant evaluations and analysis. This helps show the process and the steps in order to create my FMP. I will be doing my FMP evaluations a range of different ways. One way will be blog posts. Blog posts are a good way of evaluating as I am able to reference work, use links, use videos and images to show why I have done things and why they are good or bad. I also could do weekly diary entries explaining the tasks I have completed, how this affects my FMP and how they went. I could also make it more interactive by filming review vlogs each week - carrying out the same discussions but a more visual and fun way of sharing my thoughts. My evaluations and analysis are a good chance to reflect back on my aims and goals of my FMP and make the changes needed to make my music video as good as possible.

Proposed Research Sources
Whilst carrying out my FMP research I will need to find information about music, musicians, politics, global issues as well as history, costuming and locations. I will use sources such as Apple Music and Spotify for music. Youtube and Google about musicians and global issues, BBC for history, politics and global issues coverage. I would like to be sustainable and if there is any specific costuming that is needed that I do not own or am not able to source one locally, I could use services like Vinted or Depop to find this item. For locations, I could use Tiktok, Google Maps and Google.
